During Festive December the old town of Ljubljana glows with light installations, while markets line the Ljubljanica river. Small, walkable and relaxed, the Slovenian capital is a cosy Advent getaway.

Fun facts

  • Christmas stalls stretch along the riverbanks and nearby squares of the old town.
  • Much of the city's look was shaped by architect Jože Plečnik.
  • The old town centre is largely car-free, which makes winter strolls easy.

What to see

  • Prešeren Square and the Triple Bridge under the lights.
  • Ljubljana Castle above the old town.
  • The Dragon Bridge with its four dragon statues.

What to taste

  • Potica, a rolled cake filled with walnuts.
  • Kuhano vino, mulled wine.
  • Kranjska klobasa, the famous Carniolan sausage.

What to do

  • Ride the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle.
  • Walk the lit riverbanks in the evening.
  • Take a day trip to Lake Bled.

💡 Tip: Shuttle and public buses connect Ljubljana Airport with the city centre in under an hour; Zagreb, Trieste and Venice airports are cheaper alternatives with buses to Ljubljana. The city is busy on weekends, so book central accommodation early in December.
