The Florence Marathon takes runners past the masterpieces of the Renaissance city in late autumn. Narrow streets, grand piazzas and the Arno river make it one of the most beautiful races in Italy.

Fun facts

  • The course runs through the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • It is one of the largest marathons in Italy.
  • Parts of the route use stone-paved streets, so good cushioning is helpful.

What to see

  • The Duomo with Brunelleschi's dome.
  • Ponte Vecchio with its jewellery shops over the Arno.
  • Piazzale Michelangelo with a panoramic view of the city.

What to taste

  • Ribollita, a thick Tuscan bread and vegetable soup.
  • Fresh pasta such as pappardelle, perfect for carb-loading.
  • Bistecca alla fiorentina, a huge grilled steak to celebrate after the race.

What to do

  • Pick up your bib at the expo and explore the stands.
  • Cheer runners in the squares of the old town.
  • Rest your legs with an afternoon at the Uffizi Gallery.

💡 Tip: A tram connects Florence airport with the centre, and trains link Pisa airport with Florence. Fly in at least a day early and book accommodation early, as hotels fill up on race weekend.
