Kraków's Christmas market fills the Main Square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, with wooden stalls around the Cloth Hall. The trumpet call from St Mary's Basilica, sizzling grilled cheese and hot spiced wine make it a cosy winter stop.

Fun facts

  • Kraków's nativity scene tradition (szopki) is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
  • A trumpeter plays the hejnał from St Mary's tower every hour, stopping mid-melody.
  • The Main Square was laid out in 1257.

What to see

  • The colourful szopki nativity scenes in the annual contest displayed in early December.
  • The Cloth Hall and the illuminated Christmas tree.
  • Wawel Castle and Cathedral above the Vistula.

What to taste

  • Oscypek, smoked sheep's cheese from the mountains, grilled and served with cranberry.
  • Grzaniec, Polish mulled wine or beer with spices.
  • Pierogi with various fillings, a Christmas Eve staple.

What to do

  • Listen to the hejnał from the square at the full hour.
  • Explore the Kazimierz district with its cafés and bars.
  • Take a day trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

💡 Tip: Trains from Kraków airport reach the main station in about 20 minutes, a short walk from the square. Prices on the square are higher, so eat in side streets.
