Every winter, around Mozart's birthday on 27 January, Salzburg hosts Mozart Week, a festival dedicated to the composer. Leading orchestras and soloists perform in historic halls, while the snowy old town makes a perfect setting.

Fun facts

  • Mozart Week is organised by the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg.
  • Mozart was born in Salzburg in 1756, in a house on Getreidegasse.
  • The historic centre of Salzburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What to see

  • Mozart's Birthplace on Getreidegasse, now a museum.
  • The Great Hall of the Mozarteum, one of the main concert venues.
  • Hohensalzburg Fortress above the old town.

What to taste

  • Mozartkugel, chocolate balls with marzipan and nougat.
  • Salzburger Nockerl, a sweet baked soufflé.
  • Local beer from Salzburg's traditional breweries.

What to do

  • Ride the funicular up to the fortress for views over the city and the Alps.
  • Walk along the Salzach river and through the Mirabell Gardens.
  • Visit Mozart's Residence on Makartplatz, where the family later lived.

💡 Tip: Salzburg Airport is close to the city, and local buses run to the centre and the main station. Concert tickets for popular performances sell out, so book them and your hotel early.
