Riga's Christmas market sits on Dome Square in the heart of the medieval old town. Wooden stalls, a decorated tree and Latvian crafts and food create a warm atmosphere during the long northern winter evenings.

Fun facts

  • Riga claims the tradition of the first decorated Christmas tree, dating back to 1510.
  • The historic centre of Riga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The city has one of the largest collections of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe.

What to see

  • Riga Cathedral on Dome Square.
  • The House of the Blackheads on Town Hall Square.
  • The Art Nouveau facades on Alberta iela.

What to taste

  • Riga Black Balsam, a herbal liqueur often added to hot drinks.

  • Piparkūkas, spiced gingerbread biscuits.

What to do

  • Buy knitted mittens, woollen socks and amber jewellery.
  • Visit the Central Market in its old Zeppelin hangars.
