On the last Wednesday of August, the small town of Buñol near Valencia hosts La Tomatina, a giant tomato fight in its main street. For one hour, thousands of people throw ripe tomatoes at each other until the streets run red, followed by a big clean-up with hoses.

Fun facts

  • La Tomatina began in 1945 as a spontaneous food fight among young locals.
  • Since 2013 entry has required a ticket, limiting the number of participants.
  • The fight traditionally starts once someone climbs a greased pole to grab a ham at the top.

What to see

  • Trucks delivering tons of tomatoes to the crowd.
  • The palo jabón, the greased pole contest before the fight.
  • The Charco del Cura, a natural swimming spot near Buñol.

What to taste

  • Paella valenciana, served in many towns around Valencia.
  • Horchata, a refreshing tiger nut drink.
  • Agua de Valencia, a cocktail with orange juice and cava.

What to do

  • Wear old clothes and closed shoes you can throw away.
  • Use swimming goggles to protect your eyes.
  • Squash tomatoes before throwing to avoid hurting others.

💡 Tip: Fly to Valencia, then take the suburban train to Buñol in about an hour. Trains are very crowded on the morning of the fight, so go early or stay nearby.
